This study examined and compared the micro hardness value of a light cured
composite when cured through varying thickness of porcelain disc and different curing
time.
Ceramic specimens, 10 mm diameter, were made in two thickness(0.5, 1.0mm) with
Vita VMK porcelain(Shade U). This ceramic discs were processed according to
manufactures' instruction.
Two different resin samples (Choice porcelain adhesive paste, Bisco dental product and
Silux plus, 3 M Co.) of 6.5mm in inner diameter in three heights, 1mm, 2mm, 3mm,
were made in black plastic tube between a ceramic specimens and glass.
Resin samples were light cured with a Visilux-2(3 M Co.). Exposure time varied 30 to
90 seconds with intervals of 30 seconds.
Two kinds resin cements, three ceramic thickness(include non-ceramic), three exposure
time and three height of resin provides 54 combinations. Three resin samples were made
for each combination(Total 162 samples).
The samples were mounted on glass slides so that surfaces cured against were
exposed for micro hardness measurements.
As soon as the visible light exposed, the degree of polimerization was obtained by
Knoop micro hardness value of each samples 5 times of both sides(top and bottom)
using DMH-2.
The following results were obtained ;
1. The porcelain disc diminished the degree of the visible light transmission and as the
thickness of porcelain disc increased, the surface hardness and curing depth of the
composite resin specimen decreased with stastical significance in both composite resin
specimens.
2. As the exposure time of the visible light increased, the surface hardness and curing
depth of the composite resin specimen increased with stastical significance.
3. Neither resin cured the bottom surface of 3 mm thick of Choice and experimental
group of Silux plus composite resin.
4. As the exposure time of the visible light increased, the difference of top surface
hardness and 1mm bottom surface hardness was reduced.
5. In clinical situation of the porcelain laminate technique, it is supposed that at least
90 seconds of visible light exposure time is necessary to obtain the enough curing of
the composite resin.
